Spawns of Insomnia 2005 Once again Cartoonists Northwest (www.cartoonist.net) held its 24-hour comic competition, which is called Spawns of Insomnia. It is always a challenge for the CNW to find a venue willing to have cartoonists sweat away over their drawing boards. For this Spawning Cascadia Con was kind enough to offer CNW a venue, there were many advantages to having Spawns at a science fiction convention. For one, several artists could participate by having more than one day available for the event. Another was the sponsor of the convention, Liftport, also became a Spawns sponsor. The result of all this benevolence was a change in the rules of Spawns. Typically in a 24 hour comic competition, an artist is given 24 hours to concept, write, sketch, ink and letter a 24 page comic book. And the story, plot, etc, were left completely to the whim of the artist. Since Spawns was being hosted at a science fiction convention it was only reasonable that the stories should be sci-fi as well. And since Liftport, a company that is attempting to build an elevator into outer space, was the sponsor, it was just polite to include the Liftport into the storylines. With these additional limitations the artists were allow to come with a sheet of notes to jump-start them. Also, an artist was only asked to take their work to the pencil state. On Friday, September 2 nd 2005 I went to the Bumbershoot music festival and attended five concerts. I was not fresh as a daisy when at 11am on Saturday, September 3 rd 2005 I began my participation in Spawns. I finished my pencil work at 4am on Sunday and spent my remaining hours inking. I did not compete all my inking by the end, but I more than completed in time. The last time I did spawns I used a four panel per page format. This time around I was shooting for a 6 panel per page format. It increased the workload by a third. But, I think I did a pretty good job. The following are the results: 00 01 02 03 04 05 06 07 08 09 10 Other Comics
